Recent Staff Accolades
Head of School Appointment
Professor Alex Cameron, the Dean of the Australian School of Business has announced the appointment of Associate Professor Toan Pham as Head of the School of Banking and Finance.
Toan has been a highly-valued member of the academic staff of the School of Banking and Finance for the last 32 years. His research is focused in the areas of corporate finance, emerging market finance and foreign exchange volatility, and he teaches in the areas of corporate finance, investments, multinational financial management, derivatives and bank financial management. He has also supervised a number of Honours, Master of Commerce(Hons) and PhD students.
Toan has been Program Director of the Master of Financial Analysis since May 2006 and Master of Finance since December 2006.
He was Head of School (1994-1995, 2000-2001) and Asscociate Head (2002-2006).
Publication

Congratulations to Assoc Prof Ram Bhar – his book Empirical Techniques in Finance is to be adopted as a textbook in one of the courses at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science at NYU – an excellent recognition of Ram’s international standing.
Inquiries have also been made from an executive at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) about program codes, data and exercise solutions.
Academic Publications
Congratulation to Prof Moshirian for his work that continues to raise the prestige and profile of this School.
The World Bank in collaboration with the Journal of Banking and Finance organised a conference in Washington DC at the World Bank's Headquarters in June 2005, on Globalisation and Financial Services in Emerging Countries.
This conference was Promoted via our School Website and has provided great publicity for the School around the world. Prof Moshirian convened this major conference in collaboration with two senior members of the World Bank. The selected papers presented at this conference have now been published in the June issue of the Journal of banking and finance with Prof Moshirian as the editor of this special issue.
Congratulations to Andrian Lee and Andrew Ainsworth for having their first-ever academic publication at the Australian Journal of management accepted for future publication in the special issue on delegated portfolio management (edited by Tom Smith and Phil Dolan).
Adrian Lee is a 2nd year PhD student at UNSW and was first class honours student at UNSW in 2005.
His paper is titled "The State of Origin of Australian Equity: Does Active Fund Manager Location Matter?"co-authored with Kingsely Fong and David Gallagher.
Andrew Ainsworth is also 2nd year PhD student at UNSW and completed a Master in Finance at UNSW in 2005. His paper is titled "Styles Drift and Portfolio Management for Active Australian Equity Funds" co-authored with Kingsely Fong and David Gallagher.
Faculty Research Office Awards
Congratulations to Dr Jerry Parwada and Dr Jian-Xin Wang for being successful in obtaining a $1000 Faculty Research Office Award
each for outstanding achievement in research.
Australian Research Council Grants
Congratulations to A/Prof Ram Bhar, Dr Donghui Li, Prof Fariborz Moshirian, Dr Peter Pham and Dr Kathy Walsh for being successful in obtaining ARC Research Grants in the latest round just announced by the Australian Research Council.
Dr Donghui Li, Prof Fariborz Moshirian and Dr Peter Pham (with A/Prof M Zhong) won a Discovery Grant worth $100,000 with a project title “News Arrival and Stock Market Trading: An Investigation of Investor Reactions to Information”. A/Prof Ram Bhar (with A/Prof PK Ray, Dr N Parameswaran, A/Prof R Jamieson and Dr LM Lewis) won a Discovery Grant worth $230,000 with a project title “Managing E-Business using Ontology-Based Multi-Agent Systems (OBMAS)”. Dr Kathy Walsh (with Dr EL Welch and Prof T Smith) won a Linkage Grant worth $172,000 with a project title “The Role of Corporate Governance Mechanisms in Maximising the Performance of Listed Australian Corporations”.
Dr Jo Ann Suchard also was awarded a Linkage Round 2 award valued at $126,000 earlier in the year.
